The C variant (introduced in 1939) was the first version to go into series production. The plane cut moderately during the raid on Poland (September campaign), but better in France; however, during the Battle of England it proved too heavy and lacked manoeuvrability in the fight against the British Spitfires and Hurricanes. Based on these experiences, it was reclassified into the role of night fighter and interceptor, where it played a crucial role in defending the empire against Allied air attacks. Despite its limitations in daytime air combat, production continued until 1944. In total, about 5,760 units were built in numerous variants (A–H), making the Bf 110 one of the most significant aircraft patterns in the Air Force.
