A multi-generational family saga set in 1930s Trinidad and spanning the Americas through to the 1970s

YELLOW IS NOT FOR GIRLS LIKE ME spans decades and weaves together the lives of Elsie and Scarlett, a mother and daughter navigating love, loss and the legacy of silence. It opens in in 1939 Trinidad when sixteen-year-old Elsie is sent away from her volatile home in Fyzabad to live with her socially ambitious Aunt Fan and her daughter, Shari. The story arcs through to the 1970s, when the family are reunited for a funeral and their painful secrets are finally unearthed.

Elsie, told her dark skin makes her unfit for bright colours, longs to shine like her fair cousin Shari. When Shari flees to England during WWII, Elsie steps into her place-running the household and marrying a white American officer. But their dream of status on an island obsessed with class and colourism shatters when her husband commits a brutal act, leaving Elsie to confront a legacy of ghost fathers, secret pregnancies, and murder.

Decades later in the 1970s, the family is reunited and must unearth long-buried secrets and confront the legacy of the past, no matter how painful.
